Kerala CM responds to Harsh Vardhan remarks on state Covid prevention

Trivandrum: Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan has responded to the Union Health Minister’s remarks on the state’s Covid prevention strategy. The CM has responded that some people cannot focus on the state’s achievements on the low Covid mortality rate. Instead, they are in the pursuit of defaming the state.

Earlier, Harsh Vardhan had criticized the state for easing restrictions during the Onam festivities. The ease of restrictions had contributed to a spike of Covid cases in Kerala. Harsh Vardhan had commented, “Kerala is paying the price for gross negligence during recent Onam festivities when state-wise unlocking of services with an increase in inter and intrastate travel for trade and tourism led to the spreading of COVID-19 cases. The epi curve of Kerala changed completely… daily new cases nearly doubled”.

He had added, “This ought to serve as a good lesson for all state governments against being negligent in planning for the festival season”.

The CM of Kerala had stated, “It is very wrong to say that many relaxations were allowed during the Onam festival. Only very little relaxation was allowed. Police were deployed to control the crowd. No public celebration was allowed. The instruction was given to strictly follow the Covid protocol. The number of cases registered and arrests made and vehicles seized by police in violating Covid protocol during those days prove how the state handled it.”

The CM also reminded that the state was lauded at international levels for scaling down the Covid mortality rate. The state got these achievements due to the sincere efforts of authorities who worked collectively to save the people.

The CM also lashed out at various protests that have occurred during the week, which, he says have contributed to the spike in cases. He added that everyone should remain united to bring the state to control.
