Assam groups threaten to block entry to Meghalaya

Garo Hills: Forty different Assam groups have threatened to block all routes leading to Garo Hills District of Meghalaya. The Assam groups have threatened to block routes from October 29. Various organizations like All Assam Students Union (AASU), All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), All Moron Trade Students Union (AMSU), and other trade associations.

The student body which met at the Golpara District of Assam to initiate the decision. They have urged the states to hold discussions to facilitate movement between the states.

Assam groups questions government motives

According to the Assam, groups questioned Meghalaya’s motives for restriction. They argue that the whole country is in the process of unlocking. Furthermore, the groups argue that “the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has strictly directed the states not to impose restrictions on trading and movement of people, so why is the Meghalaya Government adamant”.

Additionally,  the restrictions have severely impacted the drivers who help ferry passengers from Guwahati to Shillong. Traveling to Meghalaya for any reason has become a nightmare with endless formalities and exorbitant charges. After the MHA guidelines, many states, including Assam have eased up the restrictions.

The organizations have been voicing the concerns of the common people, who have been silenced by the State machinery. The prices of common goods have skyrocketed, and the traders and laborers who left the state after the pandemic are suffering the maximum because of the harsh anti-people restrictions.

To conclude, the imposed restrictions in Meghalaya because of the ongoing pandemic have become a matter of great concern for the people residing in the state. It is high time now that the Government does something to address these issues. Therefore, the government should initiate talks to ease the tension between the states.
